A one-off concert and film program will honor the 50th anniversary of the Ramones' debut album in Los Angeles.
On August 30th, the Hollywood Forever Cemetery in Los Angeles will host the official tribute event for the 50th anniversary of the Ramones' debut album. The evening will center on a band formed exclusively for this occasion, but organizers are also preparing film screenings and other programs.
The lineup, performing under the name Cretin Family, includes Billie Joe Armstrong (Green Day), Tim Armstrong (Rancid), Travis Barker (blink-182), and C.J. Ramone. The concert will feature Ramones songs, and organizers have announced that surprise guests will also join the show during the evening. Before the musical program, a DJ set by Shepard Fairey will warm up the crowd.
The event will be hosted by John Travolta. Following the concert, Travolta's directorial debut, the film Propeller One-Way Night Coach, will be screened, followed by a 50th-anniversary screening of Carrie to close the night. The choice of venue holds special significance, as Hollywood Forever Cemetery is home to Dee Dee Ramone's grave and Johnny Ramone's memorial.
The program takes place on the outdoor Fairbanks Lawn. Doors open at 5:30 PM, and the Cretin Family concert begins at 7:00 PM. This will be followed by the screening of Propeller One-Way Night Coach at 8:00 PM, and the anniversary screening of Carrie starts at 9:00 PM.
Released in 1976, the Ramones' first album is considered one of the cornerstones of punk music, and its influence is still felt in the work of numerous bands today. While the members of the original lineup are no longer alive, former later members of the band—including C.J. Ramone, Marky Ramone, and Richie Ramone—continue to regularly play Ramones songs at their own concerts.
Green Day has previously paid tribute to the Ramones: in 2002, when the band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, they performed several of their best-known songs.
Proceeds from the anniversary event will go to the Ellison Institute Research Foundation's cancer research program. Tickets are available now, and organizers promise an evening that, in addition to the concert, will commemorate the Ramones' legacy with several special programs and yet-to-be-announced guests.
