Ebba the Movie (1982) is a Swedish documentary directed by Johan Donner, showcasing one of the most significant Swedish punk bands of all time, Ebba Grön, at the peak of their career.
The film begins in the working-class district of Stockholm, Rågsved, where the band was formed, and follows the group on a tour through Sweden before returning to their hometown. Through concert footage and interviews with the band members, the documentary provides insight into the daily life of Ebba Grön, the atmosphere of the Swedish punk movement, and the underground music scene of the era. During one segment of the tour, the Swedish reggae-punk band Dag Vag also appears.
Ebba the Movie not only tells the story of a band but also serves as an authentic portrait of the Swedish punk scene in the early eighties. Its title is an ironic reference to the film ABBA: The Movie (1977), highlighting the sharp contrast between the musical and cultural worlds of the two bands.
Two versions of the film were made: the original 78-minute theatrical version was released in 1982, and later Johan Donner prepared a shorter 52-minute version known as the Hardcore version. Both versions can be found on the DVD release.
