Pitkä kuuma kesä (1999) is a Finnish musical youth comedy directed by Perttu Leppä, set in the summer of 1980, during one of the most exciting eras of Finnish rock music. The film depicts the story of the emerging young music scene in the city of Joensuu, featuring songs by legendary Finnish artists such as Pelle Miljoona, Hanoi Rocks, Hassisen Kone, Eppu Normaali, or Ratsia.
The story centers on Patu, who moves from Helsinki to Joensuu and quickly befriends members of a local rock band. To impress his new acquaintances, he claims to know the capital's legendary rock scene well and to be connected to famous figures in the Finnish punk and rock world. However, the small lies grow bigger as Patu becomes the band's manager and tries to get them onto the stage of the famous Tavastia Club.
The film's humor comes from the eccentric band members, failed performances, and the bohemian lifestyle of the era, while a romantic relationship develops between Patu and Noora. The story is ultimately about the characters' honest confrontation, friendship, and the unifying power of music.
Pitkä kuuma kesä is one of the most beloved cinematic adaptations of Finnish rock and punk culture, serving as both a nostalgic period piece and a lighthearted youth story, with authentic contemporary music and characters that faithfully reflect the era's atmosphere.
