Kohu-63 Amerikassa (2008) is a Finnish documentary that follows the American comeback tour of the legendary Tampere punk band Kohu-63. The film presents the everyday struggles of a low-budget independent band with unvarnished honesty as they attempt to play 25 concerts on the US East Coast and Midwest.
The tour initially seems promising: Finnish hardcore punk was enjoying increasing respect in the American underground scene at the time, and a serious opportunity for international recognition could have opened up for the band. However, the mistakes of an enthusiastic but inexperienced tour organizer, border crossing issues, organizational chaos, and financial difficulties soon test the band's perseverance.
The documentary captures not only the concerts and travel but also shows what a DIY punk tour is really like: long car rides, basement clubs, small audiences, nights spent in fans' living rooms, and constant uncertainty. While many consider Kohu-63 a drunken punk band, the film portrays a committed group of professional musicians who, despite all hardships, strive to give the best possible concert.
Kohu-63 Amerikassa provides an authentic and often humorous look behind the scenes of the international underground punk life and how Finnish hardcore punk is appreciated in the world's alternative music scene.
