"- What's your opinion on today's punk? - There's no such thing anymore. This thing happened in the 70s... it's history. You have to move on. Anyone who imitates this thing in the 90s is an idiot. You should be doing your own thing and stop imitating your grandfather." - John Lydon -

Punk in Africa uncovers the untold story of the multicultural punk movement that emerged amidst the recent political and social turmoil of three southern African countries: South Africa, Mozambique, and Zimbabwe. In these societies, the punk subculture embodied a radical political stance, flourishing against a backdrop of economic hardship, civil war, and the anti-apartheid struggle. The film traces the movement's evolution from its roots in the early '70s Johannesburg underground rock scene, through the birth of the first multiracial punk bands following the Soweto uprising, and the militant, anti-apartheid hardcore acts of the '80s, to the celebratory, African-inspired ska-punk of the democratic '90s that spread from Cape Town to Maputo. The documentary shows how a new generation draws on this legacy to confront contemporary political challenges in Zimbabwe and issues of Afrikaner identity in South Africa, as the punk spirit continues to spread across the continent.
